Artist Statement

This work speaks about the interdependence of the human body melding with the land. The images are inspired by personal experiences. These are the crow, women and anthropomorphic forms such as flowers. Bird represents freedom and flight, opening up opportunities into the realm of Spirit. Women symbolize human frailty and the warmth of humanity. The flower epitomizes sexual potency and power.

The sculptural work is created using mallet and chisels for hand carving; rasps and rifflers for smoothing the roughly chiseled forms and electric cutting tools for taking away larger chunks of stone. Lustre in the stone emerges using diamond-bit polishing pads with water.

The primal process of stone carving is balanced by working  in two dimensional mixed media paintings. In the paintings, mixed media such as oil bar, graphite, collaged papers and fabrics are layered with text under and over paint. This process allows positive intentions to be etched into the surface of the canvas for added intensity.

The dichotomies within myself are explored visually in the work. These deeply personal images are used to transcend time and space, becoming an intrinsically bound connection to a universal expressive language.
